The first year that Leta was at Cook WIssahickon public school, the city of Philadelphia was in the middle of a big literacy campaign to raise the public school’s literacy rankings. Colin Powell, good friends with the mayor at the time, had joined the campaign and was appearing at various public schools that fall to promote literacy. Being a fan of the former Secretary of State, I showed up hoping for a photo-opportunity . Little did I know how much more I would actually get. Leta and I sat on the floor of the library waiting for his arrival and when he walked in, I suppose she sensed his importance and decided to stand with him while he gave his 5 minute introduction to the 100 plus students and teachers in the room. No one seemed to mind, so I let Leta be, and at one point she and Colin were standing together holding hands. It was incredibly sweet and I was just about to get my camera out when , Leta interrupted the speech. She began pointing to her pants and saying “Poo Poo”. Powell stopped speaking and looked down at Leta and asked what any self respecting parent would ask their child. “Do you need to go to the bathroom? “Leta said “Yahhhh”and assuming, he meant that he would take her, Leta began leading Mr Powell out of the library. I was a bit stunned and delayed but I quickly sprang into action at that point and grabbed Leta so I could take her myself to go “Poo Poo”. If Leta had succeeded in luring Mr Powell out of the library I am sure his team of security men would have been on her quickly. But I got to her just in time. I never did get my photo- opportunity. But I am absolutely sure that Mr Powell will always remember Leta.
I think it was particularly apt that the poo-poo incident was with “Colin” Powell.
I just added this blog site to my rss reader, excellent stuff. Can not get enough!
